Langlands functoriality and automorphic L-functions (1967 letter to Weil)
Statement
Founding articulation of the Langlands program: a web of conjectures relating automorphic representations of reductive groups over global and local fields to Galois representations and motivic data, packaged via functoriality and automorphic L-functions. Individual instances have since been proved (e.g. class field theory as GL₁ case; Fermat via modularity); the full functoriality package remains a central open research direction. Conjectural framework; formalizable in ZFC once objects are encoded.
